Innovate LIVE:
Today through Sunday!
April 24-26, 2015; Staunton, VA

Update -- tech users and creators are participating in Innovate LIVE! What's better than tech savvy entrepreneurs who are bringing cutting edge technology and innovative energy to the Valley?

Maybe it's tech entrepreneurs who are doing all that while embracing collaboration and open access for all.

From launching the Open Source Staunton meetups (Tamara Funk) to leading Girl Develop It in Harrisonburg (Ann Lewis), to co-founding the Shenandoah Valley Technology Council (Ron Perry) --  our technology presenters are walking the walk when it comes to opening doors and building peer-to-peer networks of support and collaboration.

Sunday morning April 26th:

Tech in the Valley:  Networked, Open, and Growing Together
Technology entrepreneurs are occupying surprising and expanding corners of our Valley - serving clients from around the globe, yet connecting with each other locally to create networks of inspiration and peer support. Hear from a panel of regional technology developers and users on why they chose the Shenandoah Valley, the opportunities that lie at the intersection of technology and small rural cities, and how they are leading efforts to launch Open Source communities and diverse networks that welcome aspiring entrepreneurs into their fold.
Event details: Over two days, social enterprises, community organizers, and artistic creators will converge in coffee shops, patios, and classrooms to explore the next wave of innovative ideas that are transforming our local communities. Sustainability, cooperation, the new economy, and arts and music will be the lenses through which we explore local opportunities for change and evolution.

The open-air format includes interactive workshops hosted by successful entrepreneurs, keynotes from leading change-makers, funding forums for new projects, and laid-back evenings for odd minds and young ideas to mingle.

Conceived as a small city interpretation of the wave of "Start-Up weekends" being held around the state and country, this weekend will connect entrepreneurs with the peers, tools, and resources needed to spark new innovation, while maintaining a creative and community-centered celebratory design that mirrors the character of the City of Staunton and our commitment to placed-based and small-city community development.

Virginia News: Governor McAuliffe Announces State Action to Protect Against Cybersecurity Threats

RICHMOND - Governor Terry McAuliffe announced today that the Commonwealth of Virginia is establishing the Nation's first state-level Information Sharing and Analysis Organization (ISAO).

"Virginia's ISAO is our logical next step in building on the outstanding work of the Virginia Cyber Security Commission, Virginia Cyber Security Partnership, Virginia Information Technologies Agency, and the cybersecurity efforts of so many other public- and private-sector partners throughout the Commonwealth,"Governor McAuliffe said.

On February 13, 2015, President Obama issued Executive Order 13691-Promoting Private Sector Cybersecurity Information Sharing, directing the federal Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to encourage the creation of ISAOs across the United States.

Describing Virginia's initiative at the 2015 RSA Conference in San Francisco today, Secretary of Technology Karen Jackson stated, "With Governor McAuliffe's leadership of both the National Governors Association (NGA) Homeland Security and Public Safety Committee, and the NGA Resource Center for State Cybersecurity, it just makes sense for Virginia to leverage our existing and future information sharing efforts by creating the first state-level ISAO."

ISAOs are intended to complement existing structures and systems that are used to share critical cybersecurity threat information across levels of government and industry sectors.

"As Governor McAuliffe's homeland security advisor, I'm excited that Virginia is leading the ISAO movement and look forward to working alongside our DHS, state, and other cybersecurity partners to help develop standards and best practices for information sharing with the private sector," said Secretary of Public Safety and Homeland Security Brian Moran.

The Virginia Cyber Security Commission and "Cyber Virginia" were launched by Governor McAuliffe with his Executive Order Number Eight on February 25, 2014.

Mental Health and the Workplace
May 6, 11:30-1:30pm, Fishersville, VA

People are the most important asset for any organization and human resources (HR) costs are often the biggest single budget item.  Mental illness and substance abuse annually cost employers an estimated $80 to $100 billion in indirect costs.  Helping staff members deliver their best efforts and ensuring that appropriate support is available when needed are key to a positive work culture that leads to engaged, inspired and healthy employees who contribute more effectively.

Investing in a mentally healthy workforce is good for business.  When employees receive effective treatment for mental illnesses, the result is lower total medical costs, increased productivity, lower absenteeism, and decreased disability costs.

The goal of this seminar is to provide you the tools to:

  • Understand how mental health conditions can impact your employees and your business
  • Recognize mental health conditions in a timely manner
  • Communicate with your employees about mental health conditions
  • Help your employees find appropriate care and support at critical junctures

This seminar fulfills 1.5 recertification credit hours toward PHR, SPHR, and GHR recertification through the HR Certification Institute.

Presentation Synopsis:

Holistic Manufacturing Performance Metrics from the Shop Floor to the Enterprise

No manufacturing facility is an island. Each produced manufacturing good brings with it an intricate DNA woven from a complex ecosystem of raw materials, suppliers, co-packers, distributors and ultimately..the consumer. With so many variables in play, how do companies begin to make decisions on how to make the highest quality products for the lowest cost with the fastest possible time-to-market? For most best-in-class manufacturers, the answers lie in manufacturing performance metrics.

Join this discussion to gain a better understanding of how top performing manufacturers are using quality metrics to optimize output from the process level out to engineering, operations, regulatory and executive teams.

About the presenter: As the Demand Generation Manager at InfinityQS, Ed Van Rens channels his passion for innovative manufacturing practices by having open conversations with Quality, Operations, IT and Executive members of the manufacturing community. At his post for 8 years, Mr. Van Rens has witnessed the evolution of traditional Statistical Process Control (SPC) technology from sets of mostly stand-alone process improvement tools to fully integrated global manufacturing quality platforms that deliver actionable manufacturing metrics and KPIs.

SourceLink Virginia
Would like to increase its resource directory!

Normally only not-for-profits, including the SVTC, are listed at SourceLink. So, anyone who might qualify, please use this link: SourceLinkVirginia Resource Partner Survey.

The key features of this new program are the searchable resource directory, a centralized (and localized) events and workshops calendar, and a blog with news and updates from around the Virginia entrepreneurial development universe.
