Welcome Back Member: JMU School of Engineering

Our sincere thanks to JMU's School of Engeering for their membership renewal.

At JMU's School of Engineering students experience a broad, interdisciplinary, hands-on curriculum on their way to receiving a BS in Engineering. Rather than splitting into separate departments that address sub-disciplines of engineering, we offer a single, integrated, engineering degree that focuses on sustainability, design, and systems analysis in order to produce \engineering versatilists\ who can address the wide range of ever-changing engineering challenges of the 21st century.

Graduates will be prepared to succeed in the engineering workforce or pursue an advanced degree (MS or PhD) in a wide range of engineering disciplines or in other professional fields (e.g. law or business).  Our inaugural class graduates in May 2012.

FIRST Lego League ... Call for SVTC Sponsored Teams

The Shenandoah Valley's FLL regional competition is scheduled for November 5, 2011 at JMU's CISAT, and we are happy to announce that that the SVTC will again be sponsoring up to three teams!

Now is the time for teams to apply for SVTC sponsorship and start a new team. Team members can come from anywhere - the neighborhood kids, a school, .. you get them and a coach/mentor together and we'll fund them (first come, first served).

What do we give? There are start-up costs for each team (equipment and registration) and we reimburse approximately half of the cost (up to $365).

If you are interested in an application for a start-up team, please visit the
FLL page on our website to learn more and to complete the application form.

Contact Nicky info@svtc-va.org  if you would like more information.

What is FLL? The FIRST LEGO League (FLL), considered the "little league" of the FIRST Robotics Competition, is the result of a partnership between FIRST and the LEGO Company. FLL extends the FIRST concept of inspiring and celebrating science and technology to children aged 9 through 14, using real-world context and hands-on experimentation.

With the help of LEGO MINDSTORMS Robotics Invention System technology, young participants can build a robot and compete in a friendly, FIRST-style robotics event specially designed for their age group. Using LEGO bricks and other elements such as sensors, motors, and gears, teams gain hands-on experience in engineering and computer programming principles as they construct and program their unique robot inventions.

While we give 3 grants a year in support of new teams, the competition is put together by Dr. Ralph Grove at JMU's CISAT and he coordinates the teams as the tournament director. For more information you may contact him at groverf@jmu.edu

or call (540) 568-6228.
