Member News:  Rockingham County, Virginia, Water Judged Among the Best in the Nation

HARRISONBURG, Va., February 21, 2012 - Water from the Three Springs Water Treatment Plant in McGaheysville, Va., ranks among the best in the nation, according to a taste test conducted by the National Rural Water Association. The test was held on Feb. 8 at the association's Rural Water Rally in Washington, D.C.

The Rockingham County water sample was one of the top five finalists selected by a panel of judges in the Great American Water Taste Test. Each water sample was judged on clarity, bouquet and taste.

"The test confirms a fact that is well-known by businesses operating in Rockingham County," said William Vaughn, director of Community Development. "Our water is extraordinarily clean and clear, making Rockingham County the preferred location for food processing, pharmaceutical development, and brewing.

"It's one of the primary reasons that Coors-now MillerCoors-established East Coast operations here 25 years ago," Vaughn added.

Three Springs Water Treatment Plant Manager Luke Hornick said the water requires very little filtration or treatment. "We add fluoride and chlorine, but the water is of such purity that nothing else is needed."

Approximately 2 million gallons of water per day are drawn from the water treatment plant. It is able to provide up to 3.67 million gallons per day.

Rockingham County is located in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley. In addition to excellent water supplies, the County has a superb surface transportation network, fiber optic communications, four colleges and universities offering a highly skilled and trained workforce, and a business-friendly climate that facilitates the growth and success of companies in high-technology, biotechnology, food processing, aviation, and other business sectors.
