Harrisonburg, Rockingham County and surrounding areas: join HCPS students on Sat., Feb. 28, 10 am - 3 pm (originally, Feb. 21, but was canceled due to snow) at the Harrisonburg Valley Mall to explore science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) activities and projects that are being done by HCPS students, -- they are eager to share what they've been doing. This is HANDS-ON, and all ages are invited.  
 

Students and parents will be able to find exciting demonstrations and exhibits and interact with students, teachers and volunteers. Something for all age groups.

Build Your Own Website: Intro to HTML/CSS

April 7 - April 28 (4 Session Course), Rosetta Stone, Harrisonburg VA

 

This class is a 4-day series running on Tuesday evenings April 7, 14, 21, 28, from 6pm to 8pm each day. The cost covers all 4 nights. 

This class is for anyone who...  

  • wants to learn how to build their own website from scratch
  • already has their own website, and wants to be able to style it exactly how they want (even if it's a WordPress site)
  • is interested in learning to program but wants to start small

This class is not a good fit for someone who...  

  • is not interested in programming
  • is mainly interested in learning about WordPress (if you fall into this category, we will have future classes that you will love!)

We will guide you through the basics of HTML and CSS, give you some readily applicable skills, and answer any questions you may have along the way. No prior web-development experience is necessary to benefit from this course.

The first hiring class in March will be specifically for TC2100, 2600 and 2800. We are looking to hire multiple classifiers in these subject areas.  This recruitment will be a very quick process so we are most interested in local candidates. 

  •  Patent Classifier Positions (TC2100, 2600 and 2800): TC2100 Computer Architecture, Software, Information Security, Data Processing Business Methods, Electronic Commerce - Computer memory systems, processors, networks, databases, cryptography, control systems, computer science, management information systems, computer architecture. 
  • TC2600 Telecommunications Arts - Cellular communications, networking, general pulse or digital communication, telephony, multiplex communication, wireless communication systems, or military communication experience. 
  • TC2800 Semiconductors, Electrical & Optical Systems/Components - Semiconductor devices & manufacturing processes, electronic circuitry, optics, power generation, solid state memory devices, radiant energy, and electrophotography.

SV Innovation Coalition's BizBlitz 2015

SVIC BizBlitz 2015Aspiring entrepreneurs, designers, programmers, developers, marketers, and dreamers:
BizBlitz is for you.
 

During this 54-hour high-energy weekend, attendees
bring their ideas and join efforts in a fast-paced workshop.
We will build prototypes, form teams & start companies. Mentors will provide valuable feedback.  Cash prizes will be awarded!

 

BizBlitz starts with open-to-all pitches on Friday evening, and everyone presents their ideas. All attendees then come together and vote for the ideas they'd like to pursue for the weekend. Together with MENTORS the weekend is spent in market research and product development. Sunday evening ends with a final presentation in front of the judges, and everyone wins valuable feedback. Innovate LIVE is a crowd-sourced, energy-packed, festive convergence of Local Innovators, Visionaries, and Entrepreneurs.

 
Over two days, social enterprises, community organizers, and artistic creators will converge in coffee shops, patios, and classrooms to explore the next wave of innovative ideas that are transforming our local communities. Sustainability, cooperation, the new economy, and arts and music will be the lenses through which we explore local opportunities for change and evolution. Together, we will develop and share the tools to build more vibrant communities, more creative lives, and more meaningful entrepreneurial opportunities.


 
The open-air format includes interactive workshops hosted by successful entrepreneurs, keynotes from leading change-makers, funding forums for new projects, and laid-back evenings for odd minds and young ideas to mingle.

SBIR/STTR Lunch and Learns

These Lunch & Learns are for any Virginia based university researcher, postdoc, grad student or local small business interested in learning the benefits of the SBIR and STTR programs. SBIR grants (Small Business Innovation Research) and STTR grant program (Small Business Technology Transfer) provide $150K - $1.5M in early stage R&D funding for high risk, new technology development. 11 participating federal agencies use this program to fund early stage technology development that will help them meet their missions. Over $2.3 Billion is available each year in this program.  

 

Each session will discuss the purpose of the programs, basic qualifications, participating agencies, funding amounts, and how to start to plan your approach to writing a winning proposal. We'll also provide a brief discussion on how university PosDocs and Graduate students can participate in these programs. Lunch will be provided. Details on how CIT supports Virginia based applicants will also be discussed.

CIT to Host Innovation Funding Seminars

 

Events provide an overview of the CIT funding sources and programs for researchers, entrepreneurs

February 4, 2015 HERNDON, Va. - As part of its ongoing partnership with the Small Business Administration, the Center for Innovative Technology announced today a series of funding seminars to stimulate innovation and research in Virginia.

The seminars focus on federal funding opportunities available through the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs as sources to facilitate technology transfer out of Virginia's research universities, increase the number of SBIR/STTRs in underserved (rural and minority participation) communities of Virginia, and increase the use of SBIR and STTR among Virginia's cybersecurity small business community.  With some exceptions, training programs are open to all Virginia-based small technology firms, and university researchers and students.
