Saturday, January 17, 10am-2pm

Rosetta Stone, Harrisonburg, VA

This WordPress course runs on Saturday, Jan 17th from 10am-2pm and Saturday Jan 24th from 10am-2pm. The $90 fee covers both days. This class is for beginners wanting to learn about using WordPress as a framework and content management system for a blog or website. You can arrive knowing nothing about WordPress and will leave knowing how to start up, build and manage a site. (And remember, it's NOT JUST FOR GIRLS!)

If you are interested in attending this class, but live closer to Charlottesville, this class is also offered in Charlottesville on the same days/times:

The first hour of the first class will be a "Happiness Bar" dedicated to installing WordPress on students' hosting accounts. If you already have WordPress installed on a hosting account, or locally on your computer, feel free to arrive at 11am.

We will cover the following:

  • Intro to Wordpress, Installation, Security, Administration & Management: You'll learn how to install WordPress, gain an understanding of the admin interface and learn of how to manage site content.
  • Widgets, Plugins, Themes & Customizing Themes: You'll learn how to install plugins and themes to add functionality and change the look of your site. You will also learn how to customize themes and theme frameworks.

The last 30 minutes of class will be one-on-one help for individual issues and any WP topics not covered in class.

Prep for class:

  • All students MUST come to class with at least a WordPress compatible hosting account, preferably with WordPress already installed. If you do not already have WordPress up and running on your hosting account we will install it for you.  We recommend Bluehost:
  • A basic understanding of HTML/CSS, and FTP is helpful, but it is NOT necessary.

MACH37 Cyber Accelerator Launches 17 New Cyber Security Startups

New accelerator countering cyber attacks by growing new companies, creating new innovation ecosystem

December 23, 2014 (HERNDON, Va.) - The Center for Innovative Technology announced today that after 16 months in operation, its MACH37™ Cyber Accelerator has launched 17 new cyber security companies. MACH37™ opened its doors in September 2013, has hosted three separate cohort sessions and attracted over 300 investors to its Demo Days.

Pete Jobse, CIT President and CEO and MACH37™ Executive Chairman, said, "MACH37 has created a unique public-private program that brings together domain experts, successful cybersecurity entrepreneurs, and investors familiar to the security market to create a platform that enables next generation technology to be deployed more rapidly. By leveraging these assets, we have helped launch the next generation of cybersecurity companies that will be on the frontlines of emerging cyber attacks."

The MACH37™ program consists of an intense 90-day program in which the selected startups are mentored in all aspects of creating a sustainable and successful business. Participants receive a $50,000 investment to develop and launch their ideas into emerging, investable companies. By drawing on MACH37's large network of experts and entrepreneurs, startups are guided toward creating successful companies that can take a strategic market position. MACH37 helps companies test their ideas and products before taking them to market.

Virginia Delegate Tag Greason, who sponsored legislation creating the new accelerator, said, "The MACH37 program is a perfect example of a public-private partnership that is addressing an enormous challenge by providing assistance to startups looking to compete in today's markets. This program is creating and grooming the promising new companies that will help successfully transition the Commonwealth towards the new Virginia economy."

Following the completion of each of the 90-day sessions, MACH37 hosts a Demo Day where participating companies pitch to audiences of accredited investors from top-tier venture capital firms, leading edge technology companies and angel groups from the Washington, D.C. region, as well as California, Massachusetts and Georgia. The most recent Demo Day earlier this month drew 186 investors.

"At MACH37, we look for companies who are developing innovative approaches to thwart some of the most prevalent problems in cybersecurity," commented Rick Gordon, Managing Partner of MACH37™.  "The 17 companies who have graduated our program in the past year are an exceptional representation of the diverse range of talent that is nationally attracted to MACH37."

The application period for the upcoming MACH37™ Spring 2015 (S15) Cohort is now open.  Entrepreneurs with emerging products and companies are encouraged to apply by visiting and filling out the online application.  The program is open to startups from any geography whose founders are ready to engage in a rigorous mentorship program designed to produce the next generation of leading security product companies.

SourceLink Virginia
Would like to increase its resource directory!

Normally only not-for-profits, including the SVTC, are listed at SourceLink. To gauge whether for-profit companies exist --who are truly serving entrepreneurs and driving economic development outcomes--  that also could/should be listed, SourceLink has indicated that they will take applications from for-profit companies on a trial basis for evaluation. So, anyone who might qualify, please use this link: SourceLinkVirginia Resource Partner Survey.

The key features of this new program are the searchable resource directory, a centralized (and localized) events and workshops calendar, and a blog with news and updates from around the Virginia entrepreneurial development universe. They have also built-in connectivity to the Virginia Business One-Stop. Thanks to the support of the initial state agency and private-sector sponsors, access to SourceLink Virginia is provided free of charge to both service providers and entrepreneurs. This is an EXCELLENT resource.
