The SVTC's FIRST Lego League (FLL) team sponsorship application has been posted (--> reimbursement for half of the start-up cost of a new team)

As you probably know, we care about STEM activities and projects that lead to STEM-field careers -- and for that reason we will again support three new Shen. Valley FIRST 
Lego League (FLL) teams with a sponsorship that reimburses approx. half of their start-up cost. Last year, one of them fared so well at the regional, and then the state competition, that they went on to compete at the world festival in St. Louis in April. We are very proud of these guys and their coaches and mentors. (They are the Brick Dawgs



FIRST Lego League (FLL) was created through a partnership between FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) and the LEGO company, and inspires future scientists and engineers.

FLL Introduces younger students to real-world engineering challenges by building LEGO-based robots to complete tasks on a thematic playing surface. FLL teams, guided by their imaginations and adult coaches, discover exciting career possibilities and, through the process, learn to make positive contributions to society.


Elementary and middle-school students get to:

  •   Design, build, test and program robots using LEGO MINDSTORMS® technology
  •   Apply real-world math and science concepts
  •   Research challenges facing today's scientists
  •   Learn critical thinking, team-building and presentation skills 
  •   Participate in tournaments and celebrations

Considering starting a team? Technical or technology experience or background NOT REQUIRED! (And team members can come from any setting, not just school-based.)

CIT Releases Whitepaper for Broadband Expansion in Virginia
Guide gives communities roadmap to developing broadband strategies, deployment


July 9, 2015 (HERNDON, Va.) - The Center for Innovative Technology (CIT) released today the whitepaper, "Improving Broadband Access and Utilization in Virginia: Recommendations for Locality-led Broadband Initiatives in Virginia." The document compiles data and knowledge gained using funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2010 to help communities accelerate broadband deployment. 


Sandie Terry, CIT Vice President of Broadband Programs, said, "This paper consolidates the knowledge and experience of our team over the past several years and provides localities with action items for moving forward with local initiatives. Additionally, this paper provides information to guide local boards and councils in setting their broadband priorities and agreeing on what role they want to play in expanding access and improving utilization for their communities."


The whitepaper covers the necessity of broadband for economic development and educational opportunities, the different technologies used in broadband, and partnership, funding and planning recommendations.  It also includes an appendix with community models that can be incorporated by other localities.


In conjunction with the release of the whitepaper, CIT has partnered with Virginia Tech's Center for Geospatial Information Technology to create the Broadband Demand Survey. The web-based survey is designed to capture high-speed and gigabit (Gb) internet service demand across the Commonwealth of Virginia. The results will be used by the State to prioritize resources and to facilitate broadband expansion in underserved areas.  Capturing unmet demand is one of the steps in CIT's strategic broadband roadmap.


Pete Jobse, CIT President & CEO, said, "The deployment of broadband is crucial as we build the foundation for the new Virginia economy. We published this paper as a guide to help localities develop strategies to advance their broadband needs."

"What's All the Fuss about ISO 9001:2015?" presented by Terry Burns
Tuesday, September 15, 5-8pm, Staunton, VA


Terry Burns will review the significant changes in the newly revised ISO 9001:2015 QMS standard that will be issued in September of this year. He will also provide insights into the following questions regarding this new revision: 

  • What is Annex SL?
  • What does "risk-based thinking" actually mean?
  • Who are the "interested parties" mentioned in the new revision?
  • What are the significant changes in documentation and record requirements?
  • What impact will ISO 9001:2015 have on auditors?
  • Why has the requirement for a "management representative" been eliminated?
These questions (and others you may have) will be answered during this enlightening talk. Terrance A. Burns is the Founder and Principal Consultant for Burns & Associates, Inc., a full-service quality consulting firm located in Richmond, Virginia since 1986. Beginning in 1992, Burns & Associates has been helping both large, multi-national firms and small businesses achieve registration to ISO 9001, 13485, 14001, 17025, OHSAS 18001, FDA cGMP's, HACCP, CE Mark and other international and national standards and product certifications. Terry has over 23 years of experience training management system auditors and conducting audits to ISO, AAMI, FDA and other standards and regulatory requirements in both manufacturing and service organizations. Mr. Burns is an ASQ Fellow, CQE, CQA and IRCA QMS Principal Auditor. He is a Past Chair for ASQ Section 1104 and current Section 1104 Audit Resource Network Chair. At the ASQ national level, Terry has served on the ASQ CQA Exam Review Committee and as an ASQ Subject Matter Expert and CQE on-line course reviewer. Since 2008 he has also served as Examiner, Director and the Executive Director for the U.S. Senate Productivity and Quality Awards for Virginia and the District of Columbia (SPQA). Mr. Burns' ASQ Fellow citation reads: "For outstanding leadership in the promotion of quality management system certification, improving the professionalism of auditors through training and mentoring, and long term contributions to ASQ and the state quality awards process."

Do you like a fast-paced environment, juggling multiple projects and making things happen?  The City of Staunton is seeking applicants for GIS Coordinator.  The selected candidate will join a dynamic team and be responsible for the coordination, development, implementation, operation, and maintenance of the City's GIS; establishing and coordinating GIS databases; collaborating with departments, vendors and management on GIS needs, requirements and issues; and serving as an information source for the user community, relaying information based on analysis of data and applications systems coding.  Applicants should possess the ability to analyze, troubleshoot and resolve complex problems, work well in a team environment, utilize strong customer service skills, and communicate effectively. 


A Bachelor's degree in an appropriate discipline or equivalent amount of experience is required.  Experience with related technology, including ESRI ArcGIS Desktop, Server ArcSDE & SQL Server is preferred

    This webinar provides important information about identifying and completing the 
    required forms for an SBIR/STTR submission to the National Institutes of Health as well as how to navigate the electronic submission process.  You will learn how to avoid common mistakes and make corrections, formatting pointers, and how to track your submission.

Improving the Problem Solution Generation Process

Organizations and individuals are always trying to solve analytical and/or creative problems. Far too often, the process of brainstorming is relied on as the primary method to help identify potential solutions. However, there are more powerful options available that are more rigorous and typically generate a greater number of possibilities that are likely to be more potent and reliable.

This 1-day workshop will present several additional options that can provide triggers to improve the solution generation process by thinking about a system from different perspectives.

About the Workshop Leader: Duke Okes has worked in the quality profession for more than 35 years, first as a quality engineer with TRW Automotive, and since 1985 as an independent consultant, trainer, speaker and author. He is an ASQ Fellow, is ASQ CMQ/OE, CQE and CQA certified, and holds degrees in technology, business and education. He is the author of two books covering some of the core skills for process management, "Root Cause Analysis: The Core of Problem Solving and Corrective Action" and "Performance Metrics: The Levers for Process Management," as well as dozens of articles on these and other quality management topics.
