Build Your Own Website: Intro to HTML/CSS

April 7 - April 28 (4 Session Course), Rosetta Stone, Harrisonburg VA


This class is a 4-day series running on Tuesday evenings April 7, 14, 21, 28, from 6pm to 8pm each day. The cost covers all 4 nights. 

This class is for anyone who...  

  • wants to learn how to build their own website from scratch
  • already has their own website, and wants to be able to style it exactly how they want (even if it's a WordPress site)
  • is interested in learning to program but wants to start small

This class is not a good fit for someone who...  

  • is not interested in programming
  • is mainly interested in learning about WordPress (if you fall into this category, we will have future classes that you will love!)

We will guide you through the basics of HTML and CSS, give you some readily applicable skills, and answer any questions you may have along the way. No prior web-development experience is necessary to benefit from this course.

Cyber Intelligence: Trends in Education, Training, and Workforce Gaps

Cyber intelligence is the acquisition, monitoring, and analysis of information about cyber threat actors' capabilities and activities so as to inform decision making (Software Engineering Institute, CMU, 2013). It is strategic and proactive perspectives applied to cybersecurity challenges.


Workshop Objectives

  • Discuss Intelligence and National Security Alliance (INSA) Cyber Intelligence TaskForce's white pa- per on status of cyber intelligence (Intel) education, training, and workforce gaps.
  • Share experience and insight about education, train- ing, workforce gaps, and curriculum development such as interdisciplinary undergraduate courses, graduate education, certificates, and training pro- grams.
  • Identify opportunities for academic collaboration with industry, non-profit organizations, and govern- ment (e.g., National Defense University (NDU), MAR- FORCYBERCOM, and DHS).
  • Expand outreach to academic, student, industry, and government (federal, state, and local) communities about cyber intelligence, an emerging specialty.

We are a group of WordPress users, bloggers, developers and designers. We are committed to building a positive, supportive and enthusiastic 'can-do' community for all WordPress and web users in the Shenandoah Valley, and to especially encourage those just getting started. 


We focus on teaching how to use WordPress for an audience of entry-level users, bloggers and small business owners. Professional developers, designers and content managers are encouraged to attend (and speak!), however the content will be geared towards educating beginners. Of course, this content strategy may shift depending on how the audience develops. 

The WWW and WordPress encompasses many industries and technologies. Our technology stack focuses on WordPress and related open source web technologies. However, other topics might include: hosting, security, design, SEO, content strategy and more. 


We meet every SECOND WEDNESDAY of the month in the Massanutten Regional Library in downtown Harrisonburg.

During this 54-hour high-energy weekend, attendees

BizBlitz starts with open-to-all pitches on Friday evening, and everyone presents their ideas. All attendees then come together and vote for the ideas they'd like to pursue for the weekend. Innovate LIVE is a crowd-sourced, energy-packed, festive convergence of Local Innovators, Visionaries, and Entrepreneurs.

Over two days, social enterprises, community organizers, and artistic creators will converge in coffee shops, patios, and classrooms to explore the next wave of innovative ideas that are transforming our local communities. Sustainability, cooperation, the new economy, and arts and music will be the lenses through which we explore local opportunities for change and evolution. CIT to Host Innovation Funding Seminars


Events provide an overview of the CIT funding sources and programs for researchers, entrepreneurs

February 4, 2015 HERNDON, Va. - As part of its ongoing partnership with the Small Business Administration, the Center for Innovative Technology announced today a series of funding seminars to stimulate innovation and research in Virginia.

The seminars focus on federal funding opportunities available through the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs as sources to facilitate technology transfer out of Virginia's research universities, increase the number of SBIR/STTRs in underserved (rural and minority participation) communities of Virginia, and increase the use of SBIR and STTR among Virginia's cybersecurity small business community.  With some exceptions, training programs are open to all Virginia-based small technology firms, and university researchers and students.

How to win NIH SBIR/STTR Funding

In partnership with George Mason University, this SBIR/STTR proposal prep workshop discusses a "How to Win" approach to the process. We'll cover the background and basics in the morning, and detailed proposal development techniques focused on the National Institutes of Health SBIR/STTR programs. Registrants may attend a ½ day Commercialization Planning & Budgeting session on March 18 in Fairfax VA at no additional charge.

CIT Releases Virginia's 2014 Libraries Broadband Assessment

Report assesses broadband speeds, costs and uses across Virginia libraries


March 5, 2015 (HERNDON, Va.) - The Center for Innovative Technology (CIT) announced today the results of its 2014 Virginia Libraries Broadband Assessment, which assesses the speeds, costs and uses of broadband in libraries across the Commonwealth.  Funded by the American Reconstruction and Recovery Act State Broadband Initiative, this is the first survey that captures a baseline assessment of library broadband service in Virginia. 


Carol Adams, Assistant Director at the Library of Virginia, said, "The Library of Virginia appreciates the support of the Center for Innovative Technology in completing broadband assessment and mapping projects.  Public Libraries are often the only broadband access point for the public particularly in rural communities.  Without such access Virginians are at both an educational and an economic disadvantage."


The assessment includes analyses and recommendations for the four main areas:


1. Cost of access: The average monthly cost for Internet service at all libraries is $601.85 per month. It is higher in urban areas ($758.22 per month) than rural areas ($468.77 per month), as urban areas have access to greater bandwidth than rural areas.

2. Internet download speeds: Urban libraries reported higher download speeds on average (27Mbps) than rural libraries (15.44Mbps). 

3. Digital literacy training: About 50% of libraries offer training, which is a crucial component in the rate of adoption. The report recommends more free training opportunities.

4. Primary use of Internet service: Library patrons reported using the internet primarily for work, education and entertainment with more rural patrons using the access for entertainment.


The survey contains an interactive map that charts in greater detail the average download speeds in each region, monthly costs of Internet services and the libraries providing digital literacy training.  The full report can be viewed online at

Our libraries are a crucial link to these services, which is why our work with the Library of Virginia to assess their levels of service is so important. CIT Launches EMERGE! Accelerator Initiative

Partnership with DHS and the DHS Center of Innovation at the U.S. Air Force Academy creates new accelerator program to bring innovative wearable tech to first responders


March 11, 2015 (HERNDON, Va.) - In partnership with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Science and Technology Directorate (DHS S&T), the Center for Innovative Technology (CIT) announced today the creation of EMERGE! Accelerating Wearable Tech for First Responders to speed the delivery of the latest innovative wearable technologies for responders.  EMERGE! is part of a larger DHS S&T initiative to engage entrepreneurs in finding innovative ideas that address the unique needs of the Homeland Security community.  CIT is piloting the use of business accelerators to discover and foster innovative individuals and companies whose commercial wearable technology could be adapted for first responder operations.


After conducting an extensive review and solicitation of America's top accelerators, CIT chose two for the EMERGE! pilot: Tech Wildcatters, of Dallas, Tx., and TechNexus, of Chicago, Il. Tech Wildcattersis a B2B seed accelerator with a mentor-driven program focusing on high-growth, technology startups; they are partnered with Wearable Worldof San Francisco, an organization dedicated to creating the social fabric for business around wearables and the Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem.  TechNexus is a venture collaborative that sits at the intersection of large, incumbent corporations and the entrepreneurial ecosystem, looking to market validate ventures.  They serve as a force multiplier to source innovations from across a global innovation ecosystem, and build ventures around demand-driven innovation.  Both accelerators offer emerging entrepreneurs competitive programs that match them with seed funds, mentors and experts to launch new startups.
